The Horrendous Plight of Those Who Make Mischief in Land

It is narrated on the authority of Anas bin Malik ( ra) that, “Eight people of the Ukl tribe came to the Messenger of Allah sallAllahu aalyhi wa sallam and said: O Prophet Muhammad PBUH! We are shepherds. We don’t like farming. Madina’s climate did not suit us and we became sick. So Allah’s Messenger said:

‘Go with our shepherd to be treated by the milk and urine of his camels.’ So they went as directed, and after they drank from the camels’ milk and urine, they became healthy, and they killed the shepherd and drove away all the camels. The news reached the Prophet and he sent (men) in their pursuit and they were captured. He then ordered that their hands and feet be cut off (and it was done), and their eyes were filled with heated pieces of iron. Next, they were put in the sun until they died.”
(Bukhari & Muslim)

According to Hazrat Qatada (ra), the following verses of Quran was revealed for them, in which Allah says;

“The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter;”

“except for those who repent before you have overpowered them. Know well that Allah is All-Forgiving, All-Compassionate.”

( Surah Maydah- 33-34)

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (ra) stated about the robbers and plunders: “When robbers plunder with killing, then they should be hanged. If they only kill, then they will be killed as a reaction. If they only plunder, don’t kill, then their hands and feet will be cut off from opposite sides. This is the command of Allah because the life and property of any human being is forbidden to another. If Islamic punishment is given, then peace and justice will prevail.”
